First P-I Brånemark Scientific Symposium 2009 established with success.
Zurich, SwitzerlandFrom 29-31 October 2009, the first P-I Brånemark Scientific Symposium took place in Gothenburg, Sweden. The three-day scientific event brought together leading healthcare, dental and medical experts from around the world to discuss advances and future prospects in osseointegration and related topics. Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark – discoverer of the concept of osseointegration that laid the basis for today’s oral rehabilitations – delivered the opening speech and was present for the entire meeting. The next P-I Brånemark Scientific Symposium is planned to take place in 2011.
The P-I Brånemark Scientific Symposium brought together, on invitation only, over 200 world-leading healthcare, dental and medical experts and key opinion leaders to exchange their knowledge and experiences with implant-based treatment modalities. Consequently, the program focused on basic science, economics, quality of life, and future developments of osseointegration for use in intra- and extra-oral implant-based rehabilitations. As a record of this meeting, a compilation of the presentations will be published in a prominent scientific journal in the near future.
A Scientific Committee of renowned experts in various fields of osseointegration developed the symposium program, free of industry bias. The Committee members were
- Prof. Dr. Daniel van Steenberghe – Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Medicine, University of Leuven, Belgium
- Prof. of. Dr. Peter Thomsen – Professor of Biomaterials, Institute for Clinical Science, Sahlgrenska Academy at Gothenburg, Sweden
- Prof. Dr. Friedrich Neukam – Chairman and Head, Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Erlangen, Germany
- Prof. Dr. Brien Lang – Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Dentistry, Michigan University, USA
“The need for such a gathering has become very clear”, explained Prof. Daniel van Steenberghe, Chairman of the P-I Brånemark Symposium, “due to the fact that today’s medical and dental meetings are often very industry focused. We were happy that Nobel Biocare has invested in a gathering with such a visionary approach and hosted this event.”
The Honorary Chairman of the Symposium, Prof. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who celebrated his 80th birthday this year, gave the symposium its name and was present for all three days. In his opening speech, he reminded the audience that the concept of osseointegration has developed into as much a philosophy as it is a technique for rehabilitation. According to Prof. Brånemark, it is important that clinicians continue to put the patient at the heart of their work, and healthcare providers should not forget that they exist to serve patients’ needs.
It is Prof. P-I Brånemark’s wish that this symposium becomes a new platform for scientific knowledge exchange, and all forthcoming symposia will continue to carry his name.
Domenico Scala, CEO of Nobel Biocare, closed the meeting by confirming Nobel Biocare’s commitment to continued future support for the symposium: “We at Nobel Biocare offer our full support to this symposium and its ambitions. We are committed to making Prof. Brånemark’s wish come true and we will help to institutionalize the P-I Brånemark Scientific Symposium as one of the key scientific symposia in healthcare.”
The next P-I Brånemark Scientific Symposium is scheduled for 2011.
